Lakewood-based Blind Blond Driving brings together five musicians with an affinity for good rock ‘n roll. The band consists of Terry Anderson on guitar, his wife Debbi Anderson on vocals, Barbara Billingsley on guitar and vocals, Eddie Hulton on bass and Bill Palmanteer on drums.

The band was formed two years ago. Palmanteer and Terry Anderson knew each other from doing construction work. Terry Anderson knew Hulton from when they played in a blues band. Debbi Anderson and Billingsley first met when attending Curtis High School in University Place. Billingsley knew Palmanteer from when they played in a classic rock cover band.

Debbi Anderson said that while playing music has always been important to the members, it sometimes was placed on the back burner as they got older and had careers and families to tend to.

The band’s name stems from Terry Anderson poking fun at his wife’s driving ability. “I just roll with it,” she said. “I think it is funny.”

They have played wedding receptions and an open house for a mortgage company, in addition to the usual bar gigs. They have played several times at Robert’s 99th Street, located on Pacific Avenue just south of the Tacoma city limits. They drew a large crowd to a recent show there. “We packed the place,” Debbi Anderson said. “They told us it was the best draw they had in a while.”

“It is fun to get together and play music in front of our friends,” Billingsley added.

Beatles songs are a staple of their set list. They cover songs ranging from Blue Oyster Cult’s “Burnin’ For You” to Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold,” on which all five members contribute on harmony vocals.

“That is something we have worked hard on,” Debbi Anderson said of the harmony vocals.

Hulton said they aim for a mix of rock and R&B, “with some blues tossed in to fill in the void.”

The band has one original song, “Just Another Day,” written by Billingsley. Debbi Anderson said that up to now working on covers has been their priority. “We had to blend a lot of personalities,” she said. “Once we can do what we do in our sleep, we will do new material.”

The Andersons’ sons, ages 29 and 31, grew up hearing music of their parents’ era and enjoy catching Blind Blond Driving shows. “That generation likes our stuff,” Hulton observed.
