Be one of the first to sit in the brand new seats in the brand new theater at the Grand Cinema. After months of construction, the local independent movie theater presented a "soft" opening of the new theater on Christmas Day.
The new theater is located at the existing Grand Cinema location - 606 S. Fawcett St. - in downtown Tacoma on the corner of 6th Avenue and South Fawcett Street. The new theater seats 103 patrons and opened with the film "The Young Victoria," starring Emily Blunt.
"This is such an exciting time for the Grand Cinema," Executive Director Philip Cowan remarked. "Building a fourth screen at our current location has been a goal of this non-profit for years. Having the screen complete now is so important because it allows us to show more of the soon-to-be Academy Award nominated-films that come out this time of year."
This landmark opening is part of the overall expansion project of the Grand Cinema. All four theaters have or will be receiving new seats in the upcoming future and patrons will enjoy a new lobby and concessions area by February. So much is going on and the Grand Cinema wants to thank the loyal patrons of the community gem for making all of these improvements possible. The Grand is still accepting donations toward the project goal of $515,000, of which it has raised $462,000 to date. Donations are always greatly appreciated.
