// Area restaurants serve up their best clam chowder for Maritime Fest contest, and the public is invited to dig in for free

With Maritime Fest coming up August. 25 and 26, organizers have launched a delicious new idea to build buzz and excitement for the Festival’s 20th anniversary this year. Starting Aug. 6 and running thru Aug. 12, a clam chowder contest will be underway to find the best recipe in town.

You, the public, are invited to stop in and try each participating restaurant’s clam chowder. Then visit to vote for your favorite one.

What could be more in keeping with Pacific Northwest culinary culture than a clam chowder cook-off? And in Tacoma in particular, artfully crafted clam chowder is a featured staple dish at many area restaurants. It’s all part of Tacoma’s heritage as a port city.

Now is your chance to sample some of the best and help win accolades for the restaurant serving it.

Visit these restaurants:

The Spar (2121 N. 30th St.)

Rock the Dock Pub & Grill (535 Dock St.)

Katie Downs (3211 Ruston Way)

Northern Fish (2201 Ruston Way)

The Swiss (1904 Jefferson Ave.)

Doyle’s Public House (208 Saint Helens Ave.)

Steamers Seafood Café (8802 6th Ave.)

All you have to do is walk in and request a free sample of their chowder. Voting polls will be open at during the Chowder Challenge to receive your vote. The winner will receive a trophy and be announced in the Maritime Fest program, which will be inserted in the Tacoma Weekly’s Aug. 17 edition. And best of all, the winning restaurant will get bragging rights as the best bowl of clam chowder in Tacoma.

Maritime Fest will take place Aug. 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at Thea’s Park and the Foss Waterway Seaport. Visit for complete information
