Mutts and models strut for a fashion, fundraising

Dogs do not always come to mind when thinking of fashion. But one local business owner hopes to change that while giving back to pooches in need.

London Couture owner Tina London is hosting the second annual Strut for a Mutt fashion show to benefit the Metro Animal Shelter in Puyallup.

The event will feature the latest fashions for people, hosted by the vintage couture clothing store, with all the proceeds going to man’s best friend. Tacoma’s most adorable pooches will take center stage with their models beginning at 8 p.m. Special guest Shannel, from RuPaul’s hit television show “Drag Race,” will MC the event.

In addition to the fashion show, there will be performances by the Imperial Sovereign Court of Tacoma, and wine and hors d’oeuvres provided by The Mix. There will also be an opportunity to shop the looks seen on stage following the show.

After the shopping party, The Mix will host the official Strut for a Mutt after party.

“Come out for a fun night, to let your hair down, play, have fun, see glam, and a new level of Tacoma it hasn’t seen before,” store general manager Bryan Carroll said.

As a vegan and pet owner, London has a soft spot for animals, Carroll said.

“She loves animals and wants to give back to community any way she can,” Carroll added. “This provides her the opportunity. Animals need just as much love as we do, so raising money for them seems like the right cause.”

Last year’s event proved to be very popular among locals. It raised more than $3,000. This year, organizers hope to double attendance and raise more than $5,000 for the animal shelter. The event will have 100 places for seating, and press and standing room areas, Carroll said.

As for models, a casting call was held earlier this summer, and organizers have only allowed pooches they know and trust for liability and safety reasons, he said.

Being both an advocate for animals and fashion, this event will be a perfect evening of fun, Carroll said.

“We’re combining a great cause with our passions,” he said. “This is much bigger than us here at the store. We’re doing this for the animal, to help them to get into homes and be loved.”

Tickets cost $30 at the door, at London Couture (746 Broadway in Tacoma) or AmeRAWcan Bistro (745 St. Helens Ave. in Tacoma) or $20 at All proceeds will be donated to Metro Animal Shelter.
