Local rockers mix it up with free show at Hell’s Kitchen

Next week, the indie and the rock worlds will cross in a frenzy of local musical extravagance that won’t even cost you a dime.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Oct. 7, Hell’s Kitchen will open its doors to the music-loving masses, showcasing some of the best that Tacoma has to offer on all sides of the rock spectrum with Big Wheel Stunt Show, the Legend of Bigfoot, Umber Sleeping and Tallest Tree. Van Connor’s (of Screaming Trees) Valis will also take the stage.

It’s live music all over the place. And all for free.

“A lot of bands pigeon hole themselves with the acts that they play with, but there are a lot of other types of music that we enjoy and acts that we like to go see,” said Justin Gimse, drummer for Big Wheel Stunt Show. “This is kind of like a cross pollination show,”

He and fellow rocker and friend Jason Flom, of the alternative/psychedelic rock band Legend of Big Foot organized the concert to expose different crowds to different types of music.

“Basically they – the Nightgowns, Drug Purse and Umber Sleeping – play to their fans and we play to ours. We thought ‘Why not bring them all together?’” Flom said.
“Things can get a bit segregated in this town, which is awful and a shame really.”

So Umber Sleeping and Tallest Tree have agreed to pick up the “indie rock” side of things, while the Big Wheel and Legend hold down the rock and roll fort. Valis gets thrown in the mix as Connor launches his own label – Strange Earth Records – which will re-release Legend of Bigfoot’s debut EP in November.

The one thing these bands all have in common? They all do their best to represent the Tacoma rock scene.

“When you see a line-up like this, it’s usually at a festival; this show is like a one-night festival, and basically like a big party,” Gimse said. “It’s going to be a really high energy show, and a really trippy night. I think it’s the best thing going on next Friday night, and if you don’t have to pay that $5 to get in the door - you’re already ahead of the game; you’ve already got yourself a PBR and a half.”
