Teriyaki and sushi restaurants are plentiful in the South Sound. But, not all of them offer a friendly, dedicated staff or a chef with more than three decades of restaurant experience.
That is where Fife’s Happy at the Bay restaurant comes in.
The new restaurant, which opened this month, offers teriyaki, Chinese wok style dishes and sushi that suit almost every palate and price range.
Chef Kenny G. Kim has been in the Puget Sound restaurant business for more than 30 years. He has worked everywhere from Olympia to Kirkland to downtown Seattle. He lives in Tacoma, but says he happy to have a cooking home in Fife.
“I love making food and finding different ways of serving to keep the customer happy,” Kim said.
Walking inside the restaurant, customers can enjoy the cozy surroundings and decorations. Paper lanterns hang from the ceiling, wood paneling climbs the walls, and there is plenty of natural light from the restaurant’s big side windows.
One of the most popular menu items is the two roll sushi special ($11.95) which offers more than 25 creations to choose from. Rolls range from the common California roll and spicy tuna rolls, to the Washington roll with apple, cucumber, and topped with spicy crab. Other interesting rolls include the Red Dragon Roll with spicy tuna, cucumber, and spicy crab on top, and the Alaska Roll with crab, avocado, cucumber, and topped with salmon. Kim can even whip up a roll using monkey brain, for those adventurous eaters.
In the next few months, the restaurant will add an expanded all-you-can-eat sushi menu ($12.95 – lunch and $19.95 dinner). The restaurant is also planning to add a sake bomb night with drink and food specials, Kim said.
Happy at the Bay offers catering for weddings, office parties, and other special events, too.
