Discover the History and Intrigue of Nature in the Northwest. After the age of exploration, the discovery and identification of new species continued to generate great excitement among nations. David Douglas: A Naturalist at Work studies the intersection of geography, science and cultural history through the work of the famed Scottish naturalist and his discovery of more than 200 species in the Northwest. Guest curated by Jack and Claire Nisbet, the exhibit opens at the Washington State History Museum on Saturday, September 21, 2013, and displays Douglas’ journals and observations of Native tribes, rare 19th century botanical books and his original pressed specimens, bird mounts, pelts and skins. In addition, the exhibit traces the origins of the eponymous Douglas fir tree. David Douglas: A Naturalist at Work will be on display through February 23, 2014. Info: http://washingtonhistory.org

Seattle's most beloved jazz vocalist Greta Matassa (http://www.gretamatassa.com) and the acclaimed bassist Clipper Anderson (http://www.clipperanderson.com) headline the next edition of the Jazz LIVE at Marine View concert series. Named the Earshot Jazz Northwest Jazz Vocalist of the Year seven times, Greta has enjoyed a rewarding career as a performer, promoter and educator. Virtually every jazz vocalist in the Northwest can call her their teacher and mentor. She honed her vocal skills at an early age, singing along with the records of vocal greats Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O'Day and Carmen McRae. She has covered the very best of the jazz classics, but over her career, has had a knack of uncovering obscure songs and introducing them to her audiences in her own style. Clipper Anderson is a virtuoso bassist who has been a first-call musician for so many talented jazz artists. In recent years he has stepped to the front mic and showcased an impressive vocal talent. For their Jazz LIVE at Marine View appearance they will perform songs from their most recent holiday CD And To All a Good Night. Also featured are three other top-level instrumentalists Susan Pascal on vibraphone, Darin Clendenin on piano and Mark Ivester on drums.
