Spiderman creator Stan Lee on Lonergan radio show tomorrow, March 11

Last week brought Pulitzer Prize winning comics writer and artist Art Spiegelman to Puyallup for a lecture at the Liberty Theater to discuss the future of comics. Tomorrow, the creator of Spiderman, X-Men and many other well-known comic book heroes, Stan Lee, will be on the new Lonergan Program on AM radio station KLAY 1180.

This month has been bustling with comics-related news and events in the Puget Sound including the birth of Creator's Edge Press in Puyallup earlier this month, and the Emerald City ComicCon taking place this weekend in Seattle.

The radio show featuring Lee will also include a talk with Pierce County Council President Roger Bush.

UPDATE: District faces challenges with low-performing schools

Tacoma School Board unanimously approved the federal grant application asking for $7 million dollars to make drastic changes at four of Tacoma’s lowest performing middle schools. Tacoma requested $7 million of the $17 million allocated to Washington State to close Hunt, revamp Stewart and Giaudrone, and continue improvement efforts at Jason Lee. The district applied for the grant March 5 and expect to hear by March 26 whether or not it was approved.

Ghosts Haunt Washington State History Museum March 6

Ghosts of the Great Hall: Unsolved Mysteries


When:  March 6, 1-3 p.m.


Where:   Washington State History Museum, 1911 Pacific Ave.

Uncover some of Washington's unsolved mysteries with characters from the past. Hunt for lost treasure with D. B. Cooper, a Washington skyjacker who disappeared with his loot; hear a ghost story from Percy Buck, sole survivor of the Andelana shipwreck; search for Sasquatch with Dr. Grover Krantz and question William H. Gilstrap, the Historical Society's first curator and secretary who was locked away during the "Great Tozier Heist." This program is free with Museum admission. Tours commence every half hour.

'Last of the Boys' staged readings taking place this weekend

"Last of the Boys" by Steven Dietz is a play about Vietnam vets coming to terms with life after the war. Staged reading collaboration between Northwest Playwrights Alliance and University of Puget Sound (UPS) Theatre Arts are taking place this weekend to benefit the Dragoon Raiders Soldier and Family Fund:

March 4, 7:30 p.m. at Wheelock Student Center, (Rendezvous) UPS, 1500 N. Warner St.

March 5, 9:30 p.m. at Tacoma Little Theatre, 210 North 'I' St.

The cast and crew are superb, and includes Marilyn Bennett, a local professional actor and guest theatre faculty at UPS who is directing this piece; Scott C. Brown (Tacoma) and Bryan K. Bender (Seattle), both of whom work frequently in Tacoma, Lakewood, and Olympia theatres; Meleesa Wyatt, Seattle actor and theatre faculty at University Prep; and three very strong UPS theatre students, Jen Davis, Mitch Knottingham and Bryan Sullivan.

Peas and early spring crops have already been planted and all around, Tacoma is starting to bloom. Spring is coming fast, and so is the Tacoma Farmers Market season.

The farmers markets are looking for performing artists and musical acts to entertain  shoppers at the Broadway, 6th Ave. and new South Tacoma Way markets. Local talent is always an important element of the market ambiance, and we want you to stun us this year!

Experience a Japanese Tea Ceremony

The next monthly installment of the Asia Pacific Cultural Center's Monthly tea ceremony will be taking place this weekend. Saturday March 6, from 10-11 a.m. will bring a Japanese tea ceremony experience to the Fircrest Community Center, located at 555 Contra Costa in Fircrest.

The participation fee is $10 for the public, and APCC members get 50% off.

Free Parenting Workshop - March 13

The Tacoma Branch NAACP, Tacoma Ministerial Alliance and Tacoma-Pierce County Black Collective will co-sponsor a workshop for parents.
Parents lead great education teams for their children. No one knows and cares for a child like their parents. This workshop will encourage parents to make their child's education team excellent by leading it. The workshop leaders will help parents learn more about how to be effective team leaders by covering Enhancing Language Skills, Education Networking and Empowering Parents.
March 13 from 9 a.m. to noon March 13 at the Evergreen State College. 1210 6th Ave.
Each family attending the entire event will be able to sit for a free family photograph. Photographs will be taken from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Childcare and refreshments will also be provided without cost  and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in several door prize drawings.

Drums for Haiti - March 4

Drumlines from Meeker and Stewart middle schools and Lincoln and Stadium high schools, as well as Bethel Junior High, will perform in Drums for Haiti on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. at Meeker Middle School.  Donations received will go to the Friends of the Orphans for the orphans of the Haiti earthquake.4402 Nassau Avenue Northeast, Tacoma. Tacoma 360 hires leader

Tacoma 360, a new partnership between Tacoma Public Schools, City of Tacoma and Metro Parks, has hired Julia Garnett to serve as executive director.

Garnett is a former corporate giving manager at Russell Investments, and brings more 17 years of experience in community and nonprofit leadership to the new organization.

Tacoma 360 is aimed at aligning community supportive services to meet the needs of youth and families in Tacoma.

“Julia Garnett is a well-known and respected Tacoma community leader. Her many skills and experiences will be invaluable to our project. We are excited to work with her as we shape Tacoma 360’s future and set up the strategies which will help Tacoma’s children like never before,” said Kim Golding, school board member and interim chairperson for Tacoma 360.

New public Montessori set to open in Fall

Next school year, Geiger Elementary School, 621 S. Jackson Ave., will become the second district school to offer Montessori classes. Geiger will use Montessori instruction in its full-day tuition-based preschool, kindergarten and first and second grades. The school will add one grade per year until all grades are using Montessori instruction. 

Bryant Montessori School is Tacoma School District's first public Montessori option and has shown great success over the years, with a high-demand for enrollment. Bryant also includes sixth, seventh and eighth grades as well as preschool and all elementary grades.

Geiger students in third through fifth grades will be taught using the traditional education methods next year.

Tacoma Public Schools will host Montessori information nights from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at:
