Tacoma Curves helps women get fit in 2010

GO GIRL. Curves franchises launched the ‘Stronger + Together’ campaign to help women take concrete steps to help achieve their health and wellness goals.

Curves for Women has set a new goal this year.

The fitness franchise hopes to help one million women get healthier through its worldwide “Stronger + Together” campaign.  

Curves has launched a special website dedicated to the campaign, where participants can find more information about the program, register to participate and share their personal stories about how they were able to start leading a healthier lifestyle. Participants will also find lots of tools, such as special e-mail templates to send messages of inspiration to loved ones and the option to create a personal profile to promote their story on the website.

The strongest component of the campaign is the option for women to share their personal health stories, explained Curves founder Diane Heavin. She noted that these stories could have the potential to help others gain confidence, become fit and avoid disease.

“By making your own health a priority, you become a strong link in the chain and have the power to affect those around you,” Heavin said in a written statement.

“There are so many women out there suffering from preventable diseases and if we can get just a million women focused on getting healthier and stronger, those diseases can be avoided,” she said.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concluded that regular physical activity helps reduce risks of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, Type-2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and some cancers.

Besides preventing the risk of disease, regular exercise also improves your mental health and mood, your ability to do daily activities and increases your chances of living longer, according to the CDC.  Curves’ 30-minute circuit training helps women work every major muscle group, strengthen their hearts and burn up to 500 calories with each workout.  

Those who participate in the “Stronger + Together” campaign can take advantage of a free 30-day membership at participating Curves locations. Pati Lynn of the Curves at Westgate in Tacoma’s North End stressed that the mission starts with helping women take concrete steps to help achieve their health and wellness goals.  

“Each year, millions of women suffer needlessly from preventable disease,” Lynn said. “We feel like this campaign encourages all women to get healthy with the help of their friends.”

During her time as a Curves manager, Lynn had the opportunity to attend the company’s national convention in Nashville, Tenn. last November, where this particular campaign was launched.  

“We felt it was vital to the health of our members to do whatever we can to keep them motivated and moving toward good health,” Lynn said. “We believe strongly in this campaign and care deeply about each and every one of our members.”

Lynn also noted that this campaign helps her staff reach out to women in a non-threatening, supportive way.

In the coming months, Lynn hopes to have 100 percent participation by all of her members. Lynn explained that most members in the Tacoma community have demonstrated their commitment to improving their health by joining. She hopes the confidence exuded by these Tacoma members can be an example for other women.

“It just takes that first step to get the cycle going,” Lynn said. “We are excited to help make women stronger in our own community, as well as throughout the world, with this campaign. If my 87-year-old mother can do it, anyone can.”
