“Teach You A Lesson”

Randy Oxford Band has been delivering its signature sound of upbeat, high-energy blues beats to Tacoma and the surrounding areas for years.

The six-piece group creates a unique, funky, bluesy sound due to Oxford’s signature wailing trombone that takes the spotlight in many a song.

Randy Oxford Band’s fourth and most recent release, “Teach You A Lesson,” kicks off 2010 on a fresh note. “Teach You A Lesson” is 13 tracks of non-stop, blues-infused energy featuring the talents of soulful lead vocalist Jada Amy, guitarists Rafael Tranquilino and Jho Blenis, bassist Eluid Atondo, drummer Asael Guttierrez, and Oxford on the brass. Former band member Patti Allen is also featured as a guest vocalist.

The track list consists of eight new original tracks coupled with a handful of covers, three of which are sung in Spanish.

The title track opens the album with Amy belting out the lyrics she wrote while in the car, inspired in part by leftover lobster, according to the liner notes. The tune is fun, funky and sets the tone for the beloved brass-soaked blues to follow.

“La Plaga” is one of the Spanish tracks that add a little spice to the line-up. Most listeners will recognize the tune as Little Richard’s version of “Good Golly Miss Molly.” All the flailing, wailing energy of the classic singer comes through on this rocking Spanish rendition.

Allen, who used to sing with the band in live performances, joins Oxford as a guest singer in the recording of fan favorite “Big Long Slidin’ Thing” – an homage to Oxford’s instrument of choice: the trombone. The humorous theme is mixed well with Allen’s sultry singing. It is no surprise why live audiences appreciate this performance.

If you have not already happened upon these guys at your local pub or festival, you should make a point to check out one of the many shows on their seemingly never-ending live performance circuit. “Teach You A Lesson” is proof that the long-standing local favorite has thrown a fresh, new spin on their successful sound.

Randy Oxford Band officially releases “Teach You A Lesson” on Jan. 29 and 30 at Dawson’s Tavern, 5443 South Tacoma Way starting at 9 p.m. both nights. No cover. Must be 21 or over to attend. For more information on the band visit http://www.randyoxford.com.
