I read the article about Tacoma City Council finally losing patience with the threat game from the car museum people. (“Council members criticize Madera,” TW 12/17/09).
It seems to me, up north a few miles, that there were several ball clubs that went through the same thing. The Seahawks had a nice stadium that was renovated for them by spending several million more dollars on it. Then when it was all done, they said it looked real nice but tear it down. We want a bigger, wider, taller, longer, prettier stadium, no roof this time or we will move out of town.
The guys with balls and sticks up there in Seattle, they thought that maybe they should have a new stadium too, since the other guys got one, so build a new one for us or we will move out of town. We want bigger, wider, longer, taller, prettier and a roof that we can open and close as we wish.
The Sonics did not fare quite so well. They rejuvenated their building a couple or three times for many millions of dollars but it was not quite up to par with the other two teams’ stadiums so we are going to leave town too if we do not get what we want. Their luck did not hold up as well as the other two teams so they left town. I offered to buy some bus tickets for the other teams before we started spending a lot of money but nobody took me up on my offer.
Now the museum guys seem to think that two out of three ain’t bad. Maybe they can get a building and parking lot if they threaten to leave town. Kind of interesting.
I personally think the taxpayers are being overburdened with unnecessary projects that have limited use to the public. The first that comes to mind is the Ladenburg Links down by the water. Stuff like that shuts out approximately 90 percent of the taxpaying public, mainly because of the high usage fees.
