ARTIST AT WORK. Painter Corey Whitehead will be part of D.A.S.H Center’s Casino Royale night, where “gamblers” use play money to win fabulous prizes.

D.A.S.H. Center for the Arts will be holding what promises to be a very fun post-Thanksgiving fundraiser Nov. 28, when the Robert Daniel Gallery hosts Casino Royale night. This is a great way to help the D.A.S.H. Center continue to serve youth in the Tacoma community and to enjoy a fun evening of partying with Tacoma’s most dedicated arts enthusiasts and youth advocates.

Like many organizations across the country, D.A.S.H. Center has been hit particularly hard by the down economy to the point that closing the center became a possibility, but not without a fight. Turning crisis into opportunity, the D.A.S.H board of directors is seizing the day to help the beloved non-profit survive. Casino Royale night is a major fundraising event for the center. “We are fighters,” said D.A.S.H. Executive Director Candi Hall. “We’re not going anywhere. We are going to fight, dance, act, sing, party…whatever we have to do to raise the money to take care of ourselves and our community.”

D.A.S.H., which stands for Dancing, Acting, and Singing in Harmony, is dedicated to broadening the horizons of primarily inner city youth through the arts and provides quality performing arts instruction and programs to the underserved communities and lower income families of Tacoma/Pierce County.

The center is a home for people to develop natural talent, confidence, and self-esteem, as well as acquire the skills necessary for a career in the performing arts. They also provide access to the works of under-appreciated African American and other minority artists. D.A.S.H. is the home for the active, community outreach organization Reality Check.

At the fundraiser, party goers dressed in their finest cocktail attire can play poker, blackjack, roulette and craps. Players will be invited to purchase “D.A.S.H. Dollars” – play money that will be used to play the games. Guests can then cash in their chips for prizes at the end of the night. Prizes have been supplied by Target, BJ’s Brewhouse, Commencement Bay Coffee, the D.A.S.H. Center, Trinity Limos, DangerZone Paintball and Hooters. All of the proceeds will go directly to the D.A.S.H. Center’s operating fund.

In addition to the games, there will be finger foods and delicacies provided by Dining Delicacies, Inc., which has graciously donated services to helping the D.A.S.H. Center have a successful event and reach their goal. Some of the other activities include:

  • Showgirls
  • Dance Performances provided by the D.A.S.H. Center’s professional dance company Zero Gravity
  • DJ Kareem Supreme
  • Live music from D1, the new hot Tacoma band that plays Top 40, R&B, jazz and neo-soul
  • Artworks by African American artist Corey Whitehead

Doors open at 7 p.m., with the event being from 8 p.m. to midnight. No one under 21 years old will be admitted. Tickets to this exciting event are only $10 and available at the D.A.S.H. Center and online at http://www.thedashcenter.org.
