GETTING GROOVY. Residents have fun getting fit during a local Zumba class.

People of Pierce County, get ready to groove for a good cause.

Toray Composites, Inc. is hosting a “Zumbathon” to help raise money for Pierce County Library Foundation. The event will take place at Graham-Kapowsin High School gym on Sept. 12, 1-3 p.m. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m.

Funds raised at the “Zumbathon” will help the Library Foundation support Pierce County Library System’s services and programs. The 20 members on the foundation’s Board of Directors raise and allocate charitable gifts to expand library services beyond tax-based funding to reach underserved communities. Last year, the foundation awarded $148,640 for library programs that included Pierce County READS, Explorer Kids’ bookmobile, the annual summer reading program, diverse communities and early learning.

Dawn Lauzon will be teaching Zumba classes for the fundraiser. Co-workers at Toray Composites, Inc. were brainstorming ideas for a corporate community fundraiser when they approached the Frontier Park Community Center Zumba instructor.

“I’ve been a longtime library patron,” Lauzon said. “I thought a Zumbathon was a good idea and suggested donations go to local libraries.”

The Latin dance-themed fitness classes are targeted for all ages and fitness levels. Lauzon said Zumba offers participants a different way to work out because it can be modified to fit any individual’s level.

“It’s just like at any fun dance party, the beat moves you,” Lauzon said. “My students usually leave the classes sweaty and smiling.”

Organizers are hoping to get a minimum of 50 people to participate in the Zumba classes and are hoping to raise at least $1,000 for the foundation. The sponsors suggest participants contribute a $10 minimum donation for the classes or bring a gently used book to be sold at the Friends of the Library book sale. Lauzon expects about 200 people will attend to enjoy the other activities, which include a raffle drawing to win great prizes donated by local businesses. Jamba Juice will also be on site selling smoothies and will donate 20 percent of the proceeds to the foundation. Lauzon said the dance floor will be toward the center of the room and there will also be plenty of tables and chairs for participants to sit and talk. Zumbathon should offer fun for everyone and a chance to support local libraries.

“I am a supporter of community literacy and of the library itself,” Lauzon said. “They are publicly funded, but they do a lot of extra things for the kids that are all under the theme of literacy, which is never bad.”
