ADOPTATHON. More than 100 adoptable shelter animals will be available at Tacoma’s third annual Woofstock, a family-friendly music-filled festival held at University of Puget Sound’s Todd Field Aug. 8.

Hundreds of dogs, cats and other furry companion animals will take over University of Puget Sound campus Aug. 9 for Tacoma’s third annual Woofstock, where adoptable pets from more than 20 rescue agencies and shelters from throughout the Northwest will be waiting for their new family to find them.

And like the festival’s namesake, Woodstock, Woofstock will be a day of fun in the sun, live music and a laid-back atmosphere for pet lovers and families.

“This is more of a festival than an adoption event,” said Andrea Logan of Pawsitive Alliance, an organization that coordinates multi-shelter adoption events several times a year. “It’s kind of a big pet party.”

There will be food, vendors and live music, as well as activities that people and pets can participate in together, such as a dog Frisbee event and agility competitions.

This year’s music lineup includes the boy band trio Menace, known for their classic rock and modern rock tunes, and the group Real-Time, that will play a mix of different musical styles.

Informational booths and samples of pet supplies and goods will be available, as well as food and vendors that humans will enjoy as well.

There will also be more than 100 adoptable dogs, cats, bunnies, ferrets and other small animals looking for a safe new home.

“We have a lot of animals needing homes,” Logan said. “Cat and kitten season was especially bad this year – there are a lot of cats needing homes.”

At last year’s Woofstock, 105 out of 150 animals were adopted.

In most cases the pets can be taken home same day.

“Woofstock is aimed at bringing people together to have a great time and to collaborate in support of developing Pierce County into a sustainable, no-kill community,” said Jim Dugan, president of the Dugan Foundation, the event’s presenting organization.

Adoption meet-and-greet areas will be staffed with animal behavior experts, to aid with getting the right fit and provide new pet owners with information on services and products in the area. Those interested in adoption can apply at the event, and prices range from $100 to $250 for dogs, $60 to $100 for cats.

Woofstock will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Todd Field at the University of Puget Sound, located at 1500 N. Warner St. For more information, call the Dugan Foundation at (253) 572-7700 or visit http://www.duganfoundation.org/woofstock09.asp.
