Fifty years of friendship

A delegation from Kitakyushu, Japan will be in Tacoma next week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sister City relationships between the two cities.

World War II created painful wounds in both the United States and Japan. American citizens of Japanese descent on the West Coast were ordered into internment camps. Fighting in the Pacific was bloody and brutal, and the war ended with two atomic bombs being dropped on Japanese cities.

The late Joe Kosai played a key role in creating the relationship. He was sent to a relocation camp as a boy. His leadership was just one example of how the Sister City program can create bonds that transcend injustice and war.

We welcome our Japanese visitors and salute our 50 years of friendship.
