On Aug. 9 the Gig Harbor Puget Sound Anglers’ 13th Annual Salmon Derby sponsored by Titus-Will.com Ford Toyota Scion will take place with a top prize of $2,500. The Gig Harbor event will be the ninth stop in the 14-derby Northwest Salmon Derby Series sponsored by the Northwest Marine Trade Association.
This derby is one of the richest. The second-place prize will be $1,500. The third-place prize will be $1,000. The fourth-place prize will be $500.
Tickets are on sale at locations including: Sportco on 4602 20th St. in Fife; Ship to Shore on 4021 Harbor View Dr. in Gig Harbor; Auburn Sports on 810 Auburn Way N. in Auburn; Outdoor Emporium on 1701 4th Ave. S. in Seattle; Narrows Marina Bait & Tackle on 9007 South 19th St. in University Place.
Tickets are also available on the day of the derby at Point Defiance Boat House between 5 and 7 a.m.
Weigh-in stations will be located at Narrows Marina dock, Point Defiance Boat House, Pierce County Gig Harbor Boat and Des Moines Marina.
Last year, more than 500 people participated in the derby.
Rich Silva of the Gig Harbor Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers said they are hoping to attract that many this year, but the number might be lower because of fuel costs and the sluggish economy.
The derby runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held at Boatworks at Narrows Marina at 4 p.m.
Sponsors for the prizes include: Boatworks, Columbia Bank, Narrows Marina Bait and Tackle, Quantum, Fred Meyer, West Marine, Canadian Princess Resort, Pierce County Community Newspaper Group, Tacoma Weekly, Fife Free Press and Milton-Edgewood Signal.
At the recent Elliott Bay Derby on July 28, part of this series, a 20-pounder taken by Michael J. Heiss took the $1,500 first-place prize.
