Bellarmine pitcher Anna Olson struck out seven batters and gave up just four runs, while the Lion bats provided all the offense as they defeated Mount Tahoma 6-0 on May 9 in Narrows League tournament action at the South End Recreation Area in Tacoma. With the victory the Lions clinched the Narrows League’s sixth and final spot in the West Central District tournament.
Alex Pollastro got the scoring started in the first inning when she drilled a hit into the outfield. Paige Redmon, who had gotten on base with a walk, scampered past third base. A T-bird infielder bobbled the throw from the outfield, allowing Redmon to score.
The T-birds put themselves in a position to score in the top of the second inning. Kiana Wells and Morgan Barnes both got on base with singles. A courtesy runner went in for Barnes and advanced to second after Teresa Donavan grounded out. The scoring opportunity ended when a ball hit by Tahni Arndt was caught by a Lion, stranding two Mount Tahoma runners on base.
Redmon hit a single to start out the bottom of the third. After advancing to third base, she scored when teammate Lynsey Moroz hit a blooper to the outfield.
The Lions added three runs in the fifth. Olson drove in two of them with a single.
Ashley Denbrock replaced starting pitcher Shannon Reed on the mound for Mount Tahoma in the bottom of the sixth.
Once again Moroz drove in Redmon for a run that made it 6-0 Bellarmine.
The margin of victory was a change for Bellarmine coach Craig Coovert, who noted the Lions defeated the T-birds by a score of 6-5 in two games earlier in the season.
Coovert was impressed with Olson’s pitching. “She came out to play,” he said. “Today she really had everything.”
The win capped a dramatic week for the Lions, who won three other games in which a loss would have ended their season. Coovert said that earlier in the season his team would have left runners on base, who in this game crossed home plate.
“We are peaking at the right time,” he remarked.
The Lions take a 12-9 record into West Central District action. Mount Tahoma ends its season with an 8-13 record. Bellarmine will kick off the district playoffs May 16 at 10 a.m. against South Puget Sound League No. 2 team Emerald Ridge at Sprinker Recreation Center. Win or lose, the Lions will play a second game later that day.
