GROUNDOUT. Wilson shortstop P.O. Williams fields the ball in the Rams’ 6-2 loss at the hands of the Stadium Tigers. The loss dropped Wilson to just 2-6 in Narrows League play this season.
Good weather made a token appearance April 11; a rare occurrence in this cold and damp spring and when all was said and done, the Stadium Tigers defeated the Wilson Rams by a score of 6-2 at Wilson Field.
“Barron (Tanay) was tough when he had to be today and I can’t say enough about Tyler (Olague)’s performance too,” said Tiger coach Chuck Peterson.
After the Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Tigers answered back when catcher Tony Rossetto led off with a solo home run down the left field line to tie it, and with one out, Tylor Medvedich doubled in Jake Voelpel to give Stadium a 2-1 lead.
Tanay had trouble finding the strike zone in the Wilson third when Ky Mazzuca walked to force in Alex Fox, Tanay’s fourth free pass of the inning, and the game was tied at 2-2. The Tigers struck back in their half of the fourth to take the lead for good when Jay Skilton led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Following a Jake Schumacher single, Kevin Meyers drilled a triple into the right center field alley to score both Skilton and Schumacher to give Stadium a 5-2 lead.
After the long third inning in which he walked four batters and threw a total of 32 pitches, Tanay began to tire in the Wilson half of the fourth. After the first two Ram hitters were retired to start the inning, Tanay walked a batter with the bases loaded and Peterson went to his bullpen in the person of freshman right-hander Tyler Olague to face Ram third baseman Chaz Ocbina.
With a 2-2 count, Olague dropped a nice change-up over the outside corner for a called strike three and the Wilson threat was over.
“We had opportunities, but we couldn’t put the ball in play or get the clutch hit when we needed it,” said Wilson coach Mark Bowman.
The Tigers would get their sixth and final run in their half of the sixth when, after two outs, Rossetto walked, stole second and came home on a line single to left by Anthony McCarthy. Olague finished the game for Stadium by going the final three and one-third innings of relief to get the win. He allowed only one hit while striking out three Wilson hitters.
“Tyler (Olague) has both great poise and tremendous presence and needed them both in that third inning,” said Peterson about his freshman right-hander.
The Ram field boss was happy about his team’s effort. “We played hard and (pitcher) Ryan (Linden) struggled a bit at times but he battled well and kept us in the game,” Bowman said. “I’m happy about our team’s progress as we have improved game by game in a very tough Narrows League, and we’re hoping for good weather the rest of the season.”
