Max visits Tacoma

In the 1920s, archeologists digging in a tomb in Guatemala discovered an 18-pound skull carved from five layers of clear quartz crystal. Believed to be many thousands of years old (some estimate as much as 35,000 years), “Max,” as the skull came to be named, quickly became an international celebrity and world traveler. He has been written about in books and countless newspaper articles and presented in documentaries worldwide including on British, French and Japanese television, the A&E Network, the Discovery Channel, and the Travel Channel among others.

The weekend of Feb. 15 Max’s caretaker, JoAnn Parks, will bring Max to Tacoma for a special weekend of viewing and meditation at Crystal Voyage, 2601 E. ‘D’ St.

Believed by many to be one of the most rare artifacts ever found, Max has earned legendary status among those who have approached the ancient treasure with an open mind and a pure heart. Max has been examined repeatedly by top geologists and scientists around the world who remain puzzled by the skull’s origins. How could primitive peoples have created such a wonder using only rudimentary carving tools?

“Although used in Mayan ceremonies, they (the crystal skulls) are not believed to have been created by the Mayans,” Parks said in a 1995 interview. “Max has met with psychics and gurus, metaphysicians, shamans, lawyers, Indian chiefs, parapsychology researchers, and UFO investigators. People come from all over the world. They come here thinking that…he is extraterrestrial, brought here by visitors of a distant star system and he’s programmed like a computer.”

Researchers assert that Max was used by Mayan priests for healing and prayers. One colorful myth tells of 13 life-sized crystal skulls that one day will be rediscovered and their collective wisdom made available to mankind. Many who have had audience with Max report that their own psychic abilities became highly enhanced; some even had life changing experiences.

Parks came into possession of Max in 1980 when her friend Norbu Chen, a Tibetan red hat lama and healer, entrusted her with the skull upon his death. “Norbu told us nothing about the skull except that it was a rare and special crystal and that only a few of them exist in the world today,” Parks said. “He said, ‘Take this, and one of these days you will know what it is for and about.’”

She kept Max in a closet for seven years, all the while experiencing vivid dreams about UFOs and a recurring dream in which Max told her she was about to embark on an important journey with him, which turned out to be true. Parks has escorted Max to countless viewings and appearances across the globe.

During Max’s visit to Crystal Voyage, those who wish can schedule a private consultation with him for meditation during which time seekers can gaze into his hollow eye sockets and put hands upon him. Cost is $50 for half an hour, or $35 each for two to four people.

On the evening of Feb. 16 from 7-9 p.m., Parks will give a special presentation about Max after which those in attendance are welcome to come up and meet him. Admission is $25.
