‘California Suite’

Seldom staged in recent years, this Neil Simon classic uses one of the author’s favorite devices: a posh Beverley Hills hotel suite and four different pairs of occupants. Simon, the quintessential quipster, is a genius at two-character scenes particularly those involving spouses caught in highly charged dilemmas. If only the walls could talk. But this is the theatre and we, the audience, become the fourth wall as we glimpse into the lives of the Visitors from New York, the Visitors from Philadelphia, the Visitors from London and the Visitors from Chicago. Prepare for a night of verbal sparring and rib-tickling laughter. The Tacoma Little Theatre production runs Jan. 20-Feb. 14. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. A pay-what-you-can production will take place Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m., and an actor’s benefit takes place Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Info: www.tacomalittletheatre.com.

Jazz Live at Marine View Church

One of the finest bands on the local music scene today, The Janette West Group, makes an appearance Feb. 12 during popular concert series Jazz Live at Marine View Church. West began singing at a very early age, moved to the Seattle area in the 1970s, worked with R&B organ trios for years and opened for acts like Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner. She toured up and down the West Coast with in-demand groups and has fronted big bands and smooth jazz groups. Now she is focused on her own quintet, showcasing her fabulous vocal talents whether it be swing, Latin, R&B, standards or ballads. Her band support is top-tier: drummer Marty Tuttle, piano/keyboardist Eric Verlinde, bassist Chuck Kistler and percussionist Ricardo Guity. Their recent CD “Snapshot” received critical acclaim. Christopher Loudon proclaimed “West is a first-rate swinger, comparable in style and gusto to Ernestine Anderson, though the warmth of her ballads is more reminiscent of Natalie Cole.” Do not miss an exceptional evening of music in the beautiful setting of Marine View. Admission is free to all ages. The concert starts at 5 p.m. at Marine View Church, located at 8469 Eastside Dr. N.E.
